Choice & Flow

One of my favorite musicians, India Arie, has a song about choice. It's called, "I Choose". The beginning line of the song stands out strongly for me. As she writes, "because you never know where life is gonna take you and you can't change where you've been. But today, I have the opportunity to choose".  I love this quote. It seems to exemplify both the beauty and fundamental dilemma of life. We essentially have no control over our lives except by the choices we make. Each choice can influence the path we walk upon. Yet if we are not able to have a sense of ease with our sense of being and our choices, life can feel strained and constricted. It takes a certain open way of receiving what life has to offers us even when we may not see the lessons it provides in the moment. It makes me wonder where rejection and acceptance plays into this need to "stay in the flow" while we also honor the power of how we make choices in our lives.

In Taoism, it emphasizes "following the way". Simply being in the flow and going with "the flow". What is this "flow" they are refereeing to? I tend to see "the flow" as a certain ease whereby you are making decisions coming from your authentic self. Acknowledging and honoring what you feel in your gut and your heart is in your highest good, even when it may not please others. I also see this "flow" as a certain surrendering to all that is occurring in the moment with no need to change it, control it or manage it. A certain letting go of all that is at that time. You know, just letting it all go and flow with ease. Trusting all is well just as it is now and always. I have to admit that "going with the flow" is not always as easy as it seems. It involves a practice of staying in tune with your inner light so the flow can unfold with ease. This is where the choice seems to come into play. As we continue to make choices that serve us well, the path we walk upon comes with more ease, thereby naturally increasing our ability to "go with the flow". Now, don't get me wrong, just because you make choices that may honor your authentic self, it does not mean you will not have challenges to face. It simply means you are more likely to feel more equipped to face these challenges with successful outcomes as your natural way of being is rooted in a more consistently balanced state.
